ONE LANDSCAPE approaches conservation as a creative act.

We aim to shift the culture of conservation from one that objectifies nature to one that understands humans as integral to natural systems.

Our Mission

We bring individuals, institutions, policymakers, and communities together, and we integrate art, science, policy, and community into the process of conserving wild landscapes.

Through these collaborations, we create sustainable conservation roadmaps and cohesive management strategies for precious wild landscapes throughout the world.

Origin Story

ONE LANDSCAPE was inspired by the example of two brothers who saved a 2200-acre ecological hotspot in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, India, from destruction.

William and Denzil de Souza spent over twenty years acquiring almost 3,000 acres of this iconic mountain range in the Western Ghats, planting more than a million trees and shrubs to restore the eroded landscape.   They founded the Shillim Institute, our sister organization, as a platform for ideas and action in the areas of conservation, sustainability, and healing.  Partly to educate developers and homeowners as to better practices in designing and constructing within this landscape, and to promote innovative approaches to community health. Today, the Shillim Institute has become a leader in promoting conservation of the Western Ghats.

ONE LANDSCAPE’S mission is to bring together conservationists, artists, activists, scientists, policy makers and others, working  collaboratively to develop community-based conservation practices—protecting, healing and regenerating landscapes locally and throughout the world.
